API Integrations

Most business systems don't work alone. Orders need to reach a payment provider, stock needs to reach a courier, and data needs to move cleanly between the tools you already rely on. That's what an API integration does - it lets two systems talk to each other automatically, reliably, and securely.

We've built and maintained integrations across a wide range of formats and services, and we design every one of them to keep working even when something on the other end goes wrong.

Data formats we work with

Not every system speaks the same language. We regularly move data between systems using:

• CSV imports and exports, for bulk data exchange with suppliers, marketplaces and back-office tools
• XML, common in feeds from suppliers, marketplaces and legacy business systems
• JSON, the standard format for most modern web APIs
• SOAP, still widely used by older enterprise and government systems

Designing for failure

Networks drop, third-party services go down, and requests time out. An integration that only works when everything goes right isn't good enough for a live business system - so we design ours to cope when things don't.

• Queues: work is queued and processed in the background, so a slow or unavailable third-party service doesn't bring down your website or checkout.
• Catch-up: if an integration is offline for a period, we build in ways to catch up safely once it's back, rather than losing data.
• At-least-once delivery: many systems guarantee a message will arrive at least once, which means it could arrive twice. We design integrations to handle repeated messages safely, so an order isn't processed or a payment isn't charged more than once.

Testing and confidence

• Test suites: automated tests cover the integration logic itself, not just the happy path.
• Mocking: we simulate third-party services during development and testing, so we can safely test failures, delays and edge cases without touching a live payment provider or courier account.

The result is an integration you can trust to keep running quietly in the background, and one that fails safely on the rare occasions something does go wrong.
