When Online4Baby (now The Nursery Store) began, it wasn’t a complex ecommerce operation. It was a fast-growing eBay business run by two sisters and their partners in Manchester. What they had was demand. What they didn’t have was infrastructure.
Orders came through eBay. Payments came through PayPal. Customer notes were buried in emails. Staff printed everything out, manually pieced orders together, and retyped delivery details for couriers. It worked - but only just. As order volume grew, they needed to scale.
That’s where we came in.
What started as a small fix became a 16-year partnership, working side by side to build the systems that would support the business as it scaled from a marketplace seller into a £40M multi-channel retailer.
From the beginning, the focus wasn’t on over-engineering or introducing unnecessary complexity. It was about solving real problems, quickly and effectively. The first step was simple: bring orders and payments together into one place.
By connecting eBay and PayPal through their APIs, we created a single view of each order. It meant we could automatically combine data, highlight delivery instructions, and remove the need for manual processing.
That one change saved time, reduced errors, and created breathing room.
And that became the pattern for everything that followed:
Solve the immediate bottleneck. Stabilise the operation. Then tackle the next constraint.
Over time, that iterative approach built a powerful, highly tailored system around the business.
As Online4Baby grew, so did the complexity behind the scenes.
Rather than forcing the business into off-the-shelf tools that didn’t quite fit, we developed systems around how they actually operated.
This included:
Each piece wasn’t built in isolation, it was designed to work as part of a connected ecosystem.
Some of the biggest breakthroughs came from tackling challenges that standard platforms couldn’t handle well.
One example was how the business sold bundled products - combining pushchairs, accessories, and furniture into single purchases.
Instead of pre-building and managing thousands of bundle combinations, we developed a dynamic stock system. This allowed availability to be calculated in real time based on underlying components.
It gave the business far more flexibility, better stock utilisation, and fewer constraints on how products could be sold. It meant that they could hold less stock, whilst still providing the same service.
Another challenge was fulfilment at scale.
At peak, the warehouse was handling over 1,000 orders a day, with a mix of small parcels, large items, and two-person deliveries.
We built systems to support:The result was a fulfilment process that could keep pace with growth, without sacrificing accuracy or customer experience.
Over time, the business evolved beyond eBay.
A standalone website, initially a support channel, became the core sales platform. By 2019, eBay had been fully phased out, improving margins and giving the team greater control over the customer experience.
We supported that transition with:
We also developed systems for physical retail and exhibitions, including a custom-built point of sale setup that connected directly into the wider platform.
The results weren’t driven by one big transformation, but by years of steady, practical improvements.
Together, these systems enabled Online4Baby to:
Just as importantly, the technology kept up with the business, supporting growth rather than holding it back.
This wasn’t a typical client-supplier relationship.
It was a long-term partnership built on trust, openness, and a shared focus on getting things done.
Decisions were made quickly. Problems were addressed directly. And solutions were always grounded in the reality of how the business operated day to day.
By staying close to the operation and evolving the systems over time, we avoided the need for constant rebuilds or disruptive platform changes.
Instead, the system grew with the business and became a key part of its success.
Today, we work with businesses facing similar challenges, where growth is being held back by operational complexity or systems that no longer fit.
Especially in ecommerce and logistics-heavy environments, there comes a point where off-the-shelf solutions stop being enough.
That’s where we come in. We help businesses simplify complexity, build the right systems, and create a foundation for long-term growth.
If your systems are slowing down growth, creating manual work, or becoming difficult to support, we can help you identify what needs fixing and what comes next.
