UniWorks is a joint initiative by the Sheffield Hallam University and University of Sheffield Careers services. It provides information for potential students which is useful to determine which courses they could take and what to expect in regards to employment at the end of the course, based on questionnaire responses from graduates.
We worked with QR8 to update their site and provide a better, more accessible site that adheres to modern requirements. Here at Artumi we were responsible for reprogramming the site.

We have completed another project in conjunction with QR8, this time for the only Circus Skills Training school in Yorkshire, Green Top Circus. And we are pretty impressed with the results.

Artumi’s part of the project was to provide the content management system (CMS) which, for once, did not require too much to be built for it. We did build a Circus act search facility however, which allows the Green Top team to setup new Circus skills and delete old ones as required.
You can read more on the Green Top Circus project page.

We are pleased to announce another site has been completed on time and on budget. Capland Properties offer student housing in Sheffield and required a new design of their site (provided by QR8 and coded by us) complete with a content management system to control their housing stock. You can read more about this on its project page.

Artumi has been chosen to build the new Sheffield Hallam and University of Sheffield UniWorks website in partnership with the web design company QR8. The website provides information to potential students to help them choose their course.
The current site is not user friendly enough, with a lot of the information too hidden away, and it does not follow the web accessibility guidelines well enough.
We look forward to providing another top notch solution on time and on budget.

We are pleased to announce that another site has been completed on time and on budget. Nikken Kosakusho now have a multi-lingual Content Management system with specialised search features along with standard Content Management System functionality. We worked alongside QR8 and Metrea Consulting to produce this site and are very pleased with the results. We look forward to working with both Metrea and QR8 in the future.

Artumi Systems has been asked to provide new systems for 2 companies by QR8 who are a design company based in Sheffield.
We have been asked to produce a content management system for Nikken Kosakusho, who require a website that can be translated into many languages, which makes this a rather special project.
The other project is the development of a special auction style website. We will write about this after completion, since the concept is going to be kept under wraps until the site goes live.
We are delighted that we have been asked to work with such a premier design company and look forward to future work with them.

The parts of the Online 4 Baby project which is most gratifying to do is the Warehouse Management and Stock Control. There was a lot to learn here, a lot to improve upon, and a nice problem to work upon.
Essentially the problem is one which will have been met with a thousand times or more. How to pick effectively. Primo increases the number of options when it comes to warehouse management for Online 4 Baby. Because the orders are in a database and the items which need to be sent out are easily accessible things that had been taken for granted were looked at again.
By their earlier system Online 4 Baby had to pick all the items in an order together, now that is no longer the case. So long as all the items in an order are sent the same day the courier is happy.
The task at hand is minimising the amount of walking the picking staff have to do in order to complete the days orders. There are a number of things Primo has done to achieve this:-
- The highest selling items are stored nearest the packing area.
- Orders are picked depending upon location in warehouse, not the time the order received. Essentially, if there are 8 of a particular item to be sent out they are all picked together rather than picking them with the order of which they may only be a small part. Of course there are some limits built in to make sure that orders get sent on the correct day.
- To help the pickers deal with the case where they do have to walk around the warehouse for their next batch of items Artumi Systems has developed a shortest route finder which is used to order the items on the batch sheet to minimize the walking distance. This was particularly pleasing for us as the warehouse is large and the program had to be able to figure out the route quickly as the ordering system is based on real time orders.
- Obviously, only some pallet spaces can be picked from, the rest are used for storage. Primo is asked to choose a pallet space as stock comes in, and it finds the closest pallet space to the area where the produce will eventually be picked from. This further reduces the amount of time required to replenish the picking spaces.
Usually web application development is more about moving data around than calculation, so this part of the project was particularly nice to work on.

Artumi Systems has written a replacement for tinyurl.com. It’s mentioned in other parts of the site, but I thought I would mark it’s existence in the blog. It is a simple application whose purpose is to turn long URLs into short ones which are suitable for reading out over the phone, or placing in an email.
There are a number of advantages of using this over using tinyurl.com.
- The domain is your own, and therefore looks better
- The links can be set up to report how many times it has been viewed. That means that you can send a link to someone and find out if they bothered to click it.
- It is free of adverts
- The URLs are more suited to being read out over the phone, compared to the URLs produced by tinyurl.com, as letters such as “b” and “p” do not appear in the short URL.
Like tinyurl.com our short links website is free for anyone to use.
Enjoy!
